May 19th, 2016, and the Kids' Fishing Day has come and gone... but the memories remain!
Kids' Fishing Day 2016 was a great success. More than 300 kids, parents, and grandparents enjoyed the event at Rice Family Pavilion on Lake Wedowee. The weather, which had been questionable, cooperated beautifully for the event. Outdoor activities included fishing for catfish, games, prizes, and food. Each spring, the LWPOA sponsors a Fishing Day for Kids ages 3 through 15 at the Rice Pavilion on Lake Wedowee. The LWPOA purchases channel catfish and places them in the lake inside nets installed by Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. Hot dogs, prepared by The Sheriff and County Judges, and chips, cookies and drinks are served. The use of the Pavilion is donated by the Rice Family.
Over the last few years, it has become tradition for the event to be held on the afternoon of the last day of the school term. For 2016, the event will be held Thursday, May 19 from 3:00 to 6:00 PM. Children of residents and property owners and kids from Randolph and Clay Counties are invited.
Last year, more than 230 children, accompanied by parents and grandparents, attended and caught a lot of fish to take home for family meals.
Local merchants support the event with contributions of supplies, money and prizes. The Randolph Leader Newspaper and local Radio Stations help with publication of the event. Emergency standby services are provided by the Randolph County Rescue Squad and by Southern Ambulance Services.
Fish that are not caught during the event are salvaged with removal of the nets and donated to community agencies. Each year, about 20 LWPOA volunteers help with the planning, organization and presentation of the event. You can volunteer to participate by contacting Chairperson Tom Garland at (678-230-4886) or emailing Tom at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Thanks to the team that prepared this year's big event!
